Appletviewer can't display applet in MSIE 6.01 or 7 if it is developed
using Java 2 SDK v1.3.1 or v1.4.0. The former is Win95 as minimum
operating system which also works in Win2000 where their MSIE is 5.01
or below. Which SDK should I use to run applet for MSIE 6 or above?

There are so many things worng with the few sentences
you typed that it is difficult to know where to begin.
1) AppletViewer is purely a development tool (though it
is also used to display applets that are *not* embedded
in browsers, when launching using webstart).
2) The level of applet that a browser will display depends
on the level of JRE it has installed.
3) A Java 1.1 applet will run in any 1.1+ JRE, from Java
1.1 through Java 1.6 and beyond. A Java 1.4 compatible
applet will run in Java 1.4, 1.5, 1.6..

To ensure the minimum required Java is available for an
applet, there are a number of options.
1) Sun's latest script to check for a JRE version
<https://jdk6.dev.java.net/deployment_advice.html>
2) The Applet Minimum Version Checker
<http://sdnshare.sun.com/view.jsp?id=2294>
..which you can also see/download at my site..
<http://pscode.org/jre.html>
3) The most recent addition, also does other things
besides minimum version checking, Wrapplet. (still in
development, and rough around the edges).
